Sirius Black was the best friend of James Potter at Hogwarts. Upon leaving school, Sirius became a member of the Order of the Phoenix in their fight against Lord Voldemort. People began to realize that information was being passed to the Death Eaters from the Order at this time, and the finger of suspicion pointed at Sirius. Sirius was arrested for murder and spent 12 years in Azkaban, believed by all to be a traitor and servant of Voldemort. Sirius survived Azkaban without going mad due to the knowledge that he was innocent and finally escaped by using his ability as an Animagus.
